Why Reading Is the Greatest Gift You Can Give a Child

As a teacher, literacy specialist, and lifelong lover of books, I’ve witnessed the incredible power of reading to change lives. It’s more than just a skill—it’s a gift that opens doors to knowledge, imagination, and connection. Whether it’s through shared bedtime stories, independent learning, or classroom learning, the ability to read is one of the absolute best tools we can give to children.

The Transformative Power of Reading

Reading does more than teach children how to decode words on a page. It builds confidence, strengthens problem-solving skills, and fosters empathy. Through stories, children learn to see the world through different perspectives, understand complex emotions, and dream beyond their circumstances.

As a literacy specialist, I’ve seen students go from struggling with their first letter sounds and sentences to eagerly reading chapter books with confidence and pride. I’ve also seen how reading helps children connect to their own feelings, to others, and to ideas they might never encounter otherwise. The beauty of reading is that it’s not just about academic success; it’s about creating a lifelong relationship with learning and growth.

How to Foster a Love of Reading

Whether you’re a parent, teacher, or caregiver, here are some simple ways to help children embrace reading:

  1. Make Reading a Daily Ritual: Set aside time each day to read with your child or encourage them to read independently. Even 10 minutes can make a big difference!

  2. Give them Choice Give kids the freedom to pick books that match their interests. Yes, comic books and graphic novels count! When they feel ownership, they’re more likely to want to read. The more they practice, they better they will become!

  3. Be a Role Model: Show your own love for reading by picking up a book, discussing what you’re reading, or sharing your favorite stories from childhood.

  4. Create a Reading-Friendly Environment: Fill your home or classroom with books, cozy spaces (pillows, chairs, stuffed animals, etc.) and positive encouragement to explore.

  5. Connect Books to Real Life: Tie the stories you read to real-world experiences or values. For example, a story about teamwork can lead to a discussion about helping others. There are tons of highly engaging books out there with social-emotional lessons.

Why I Wrote Angelo’s Garden

My debut children’s book, Angelo’s Garden, is a reflection of my belief in the power of stories. Inspired by my grandfather’s life and the lessons he left behind, it’s a heartfelt tale about legacy, connection, and how the seeds we plant today grow into something beautiful tomorrow.

It’s my hope that Angelo’s Garden inspires both children and adults to reflect on their own stories—the people and moments that shape them—and to share those stories with others. Whether it’s used as a bedtime read or a classroom tool, the book is designed to spark meaningful conversations and inspire creativity.

A Call to Action

Reading truly is a gift—a gateway to a brighter future, a more compassionate world, and endless possibilities. Let’s work together to nurture this gift in the lives of children, one story at a time.

If you’re looking for a place to start, I’d love for you to explore Angelo’s Garden. It’s more than a book—it’s an invitation to grow, connect, and dream.

Thank you for joining me on this journey to inspire a love of reading. Let’s plant the seeds of literacy together and watch them flourish.

Warmly,
Chris Conolly
